One of my favorite places is Bento-Ya on Sheikh Zayed Road. No pretentious decor, just strait forward great food and good Manga to read. It's also Japanese owned. It's my recommendation for a casual lunch or dinner.

These are the Japanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi that I have visited:
Toki located at the Hilton Corniche This is one of my favorite locations. They also have a special menu with imported items from Japan's Tsukiji market.
Taiki located at Al Ain Palace Hotel This is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi. It was previously called Zen. Its location is next to the Meridian which is next to the Maria Grande Cinema. I always have a debate with friends on whether Taiki or Toki is better.
Wasabi located next to the Porche dealership This restaurant is Toki's sister restaurants. Its location is difficult to reach due to construction. It is worth a visit as the interior is really nice. I didn't enjoy their sushi and ramen as much as the other restaurants, but it may cater to your taste buds.
Samurai located next to Al Diar Capital Hotel Parking is extremely difficult in this place! However, they have a grill in the center of the tables where you can order meat and cook it yourself while having conversations with friends. It is also a lot cheaper than other Japanese restaurants. The owner is an Egyptian who is very interested in Japanese culture and is also very friendly. They had some really good Spicy Tuna rolls too. My dentist likes their bento. It is good for a casual dinner without having to worry about breaking your wallet.
There are some other Japanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi (like Benihana at Rotana Beach Hotel and Kazu at Yas) but I have not tried these.

My recommendation of Japanese restaurants in Dubai is
*Kisaku in Al Khaleej Hotel in Deira 04-334-1000 This is where all Japanese businessmen gather on weekdays, and Japanese family on weekends. The atmosphere is very "at home" ambiance, completely different from those fashionable ones like ZUMA. I think this is the most popular restaurant for Japaneser residents in Dubai. They have Karaoke rooms too:)
*Benkay in JAL Hotel 04-308-0000 JAL hotel Dubai finally opened this year. It has Japanese restaurant "Benkay" which has 3floors, Japanese, Teppanyaki(grill), and Sushi. Sushi floor is the most popular one since the chef Kitade is very famous, he used to work in JAL Fujairah and many Japanese people went there from Dubai all the way to eat his Sushi.
*Hanabi in Asiana Hotel in Deira 04-238-7777 Hanabi is the newest Japanese restaurant in Dubai, just opened this month. I just tried last week and this can be very popular soon!
*Kino Cafe in Kinokuniya bookstore in Dubai Mall Whenever I go to Dubai mall, I stop by this cafe for coffee(Japanese), snacks or Maccha(Green tea) shake. They serve varieties of Japanese cafe menu. It has the best view of the fountain and is always quiet and relaxing space esp on weekdays.
